Jim Irwin – First Selectman
Jim Irwin has lived in Suffield for almost two decades and has three generations of family in town. He is currently serving on the Kent Memorial Library Commission. Jim is focused on ensuring the freedom to read and defending the first amendment rights of all the people of Suffield. He is also a long-time Board member of the Friends of KML and actively participates in their annual book sale. He served for two years on the Town Advisory Commission on Capital Expenditures (ACCE) and was elected as its secretary in 2023. He has consulted with the town Department of Public Works on numerous library projects, volunteered with Meals on Wheels, and annually gives back to the community through his work at the Suffield Community Aid vegetable garden.
Qualifications & Experience:
- During Jim’s 30-year career, he has managed a department of 50+ full time employees and hundreds of part-time employees, both union and non-union, while producing large scale events across the USA, while receiving accolades for his ability to control job costs.
- Jim has worked with numerous statesmen and dignitaries. His recurring client base included: The World Bank and International Monetary Fund, the American Association of School Administrators and the American Library Association, to mention just a few.
- Through honesty and persuasion, Jim has developed the ability to mediate conflicting interests, inspire confidence and chart a path toward mutually beneficial solutions.
- Jim’s goal as a public servant is to use his proven management ability to create an atmosphere that encourages public input through frank, open discussions of our proposed town policies and actions.
