Jamie Drzyzga – Board of Education

About Jamie:

• Experience and Qualifications:  I believe that my 16 years of experience in public education provides me with invaluable perspective as a BOE member. I have a strong understanding of best practices for educators, knowledge of state requirements as they relate to curriculum and assessments and a clear vision of how data can inform instruction. Most importantly, I appreciate how each decision we make as a board has a direct impact on our students, each of them with their own unique interests, abilities and talents.

  The majority of my teaching career has been spent teaching life science to high school students in the Enfield School District. I have also spent time as a department chair, a middle school teacher, a clinical educator for undergraduate students at Boston College and a lab instructor at Northeastern University.

  I have spent the past sixteen months as a member of the Suffield BOE. During this time of transition, I am proud of all we have accomplished. Our new administrative team is made up of seasoned educators with notable track records. We hired key central office staff that continues to move our district forward and provide our students with the education they deserve, as we strive to meet our newly developed BOE goals.

• Education: I have a Bachelor of Science degree in athletic training from Northeastern University. I then received a certificate of teaching from Westfield State University and a Master of Science degree in educational leadership from Central Connecticut State University.

• Family: I grew up in Connecticut and have resided in New England my entire life. I have lived in Suffield for the past 13 years with my husband, Paul and our three children. We have a daughter in eighth grade and a son in sixth, both at Suffield Middle School. Our youngest son will begin third grade this fall at McAlister Intermediate School.

• Community Involvement: I have been an active participant in Suffield Elementary PTO, serving as a co-chair for various events. I have also volunteered as a coach for Suffield Park and Recreation, Suffield Little League and Suffield Soccer Club.

Why Jamie is running for the BOE:

I want to continue to serve on the Board of Education because it is an opportunity for me to use my knowledge and expertise to give back to our community. Our school district is full of talented and devoted teachers and administrators. During my short time on the BOE, we have been in a period of transition and rebuilding. While I enjoyed the challenge of fostering stability in our schools over this past year, I now want to delve deeper into how we can help our administrators and teachers provide the best opportunities for our students to grow and improve their educational outcomes.

Once elected, I plan to:

• Continue to advocate for transparency and improved communication amongst all stakeholders. For our schools to continue to grow, we truly need to listen to the needs of our students and do our best to provide them with the resources to be successful while demonstrating fiscal responsibility.
• Ask important questions related to systematic use of data for student success and advocate for genuine discussion as to how we will manage academic short falls so that our students can continue to grow and succeed.
• Encourage community members, parents, teachers and staff to become involved as we begin to develop a five year strategic plan for the district. Stakeholders have their own unique perspective that deserves to be shared and heard so that we can continue to evolve as a school district.
• Work with school administration to develop a true vision and mission for our school district and ensure accountability using measurable outcomes as we strive to achieve this collective goal.
